Pro Bono
The KwaZulu-Natal Society of Advocates is committed to promote access to justice in South Africa. Each member of the Society is required to perform a minimum amount of pro bono service (legal assistance without charging a fee) per year within the rules of the Society.
MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC
Please note that our offices do not provide legal advice. For legal advice and related services, you must obtain the services of an attorney. To locate an attorney you may contact the Legal Practice Council on 010 007 8500 or at https://lpc.org.za/ for more information.
The Pro Bono Committee manages the allocation of counsel to act pro bono for attorneys and organisations who qualify in terms of Rule 20 of the Rules of Professional Conduct and Etiquette, namely :
- Attorneys employed at university law clinics; (031 260 2446 / 033 260 6138)
- Attorneys employed at non-governmental organisations;
- The Legal Aid Board; (031 918 8110 / 033 394 2190)
- Justice Centres within the meaning of section 27.2.1 of the LPC Code of Conduct for Legal Practitioners;
- A judge, magistrate or other presiding officer of any court or tribunal;
- ProBono.org (031 301 6178)
Members of the public applying for pro bono assistance must first have an attorney or qualifying organisation on record, before such applications can be considered.
ATTORNEYS AND QUALIFYING ORGANISATIONS
It is important to understand that the Bar is a referral profession. Accordingly, in order for the Committee to allocate Counsel to act pro bono, the client must already be represented by an attorney (usually also acting pro bono).
Applications for pro bono assistance are made to the Society by the attorney acting for the litigant by completing the pro bono application form and transmitting it together with any supporting documentation to kznbarrecp@law.co.za.
Once the application has been made, it will be considered by the Pro Bono Committee, and the attorney will be advised of the outcome.
